Campanula Blithe Spirit
from Lesley Baker
This Campanula could have equally been posted as the plant of the month for July, it has had such an astonishing number of flowers for weeks! I have had this plant for 3 growing seasons now, and it has improved each year.
According to Graham Nicholls’ book Dwarf Campanulas, it was bred in New Zealand. Firstly there was C. Maie Blyth, which is very like Blithe Spirit but blue, and named after the lady who raised the seedling. Later Lesley Cox (owner of the nursery) raised more seedlings, including Blithe Spirit.
The plant makes a very neat mound of foliage, somewhat crinkled, with a seemingly endless display of flattish white flowers. They don’t seem to last long – I have to dead-head each day – but the buds just keep coming! My plant is in a pot in a sunny position, but it can grow in trough or rockery. It doesn’t seem to have struggled at all in the very hot spells that we had earlier, unlike some others.
I understand that it can be raised from cuttings in spring – I will have to try and remember to do that next year. Look out for plants at the next Plant Sale!!
